Parvin graduated from law school in Cincinnati in 1837. In 1838 he was appointed private secretary to Robert Lucas, former governor of Ohio. Parvin accompanied Lucas to Iowa in August of 1838. From 1839 until 1860 he practiced law in Bloomington, Iowa (now Muscatine). In 1860 he moved to Iowa City to teach natural history at the State University.
